Candice warner says her husband, David warner, “has never said his part” in the infamous ball handling scandal that rocked Australian cricket in 2018.
Warner was suspended for 12 months along with then-Test Captain Steve Smith after Cameron Bancroft, suspended for nine months, identified him as the mastermind behind the decision to use sandpaper to alter the state of the ball during Test. Newlands of that year against the Proteas.
It is considered one of the darkest moments in Australian cricket history and the images of Smith and Warner crying upon returning to their home country will be forever remembered by cricket fans.
That 2018 series against the Proteas heated up throughout, with the sides colliding in the tunnel outside the locker room during the Kingsmead Test, where Warner and South African goalkeeper Quinton de Kock almost came to blows.
Nothing has been confirmed since, but reports at the time suggested that De Kock had passed an offensive comment in the Warnerian manner, referring to an incident between Candice and All Black star Sonny Bill Williams, which had occurred a decade before.
Candice Warner has spoken about how difficult that moment was for her and her family, and spoke on Channel 7 SAS Australia This week, she opened up about the situation while also defending her husband for his role in manipulation by hinting that there was more to the story that fans didn’t know about.
When asked if Warner had tampered with the ball, Candice said, “No. That’s the opinion of other people. He has never said his part,” she said.
“I think too many people are quick to make judgments or opinions about me or my family.
“The media make us pass as people we are not: bad people, bad parents.”
Candice Warner also referred to the hostile environment she had experienced in South Africa.
“There were incidents in South Africa where people tried to make fun of me, to make fun of me. To belittle me in front of my family,” he said.
“Because of an incident that happened in the past. And they think it’s funny.”
