JOHANNESBURG – The architect of South African freedom. This is how President Cyril Ramaphosa describes the late icon of the struggle, Oliver Reginald Tambo.
Ramaphosa unveiled a giant bronze statue of Tambo at the Johannesburg airport that bears his name.
But there are questions about one aspect of the statue.
Tambo’s son Dali, who confirmed that he is the one who begged for the multi-million dollar bid to produce his father’s image, defended the inclusion of an ANC logo on the statue.

He says, O Tambo cannot divorce the ANC.
“The ANC insignia is there and with great pride. The cross is there and the Freedom Charter is there. The Freedom Charter was also an ANC initiative. You cannot run away from that.
Ramaphosa says more needs to be done to honor supporters of the struggle and promote the history of the liberation struggle.
