In response to a question from Tim Brauteseth of the district attorney, Ramaphosa said that while he was concerned about the recent increase in Covid-19 infections, “there was no need for alarm.”
He said he had received a report from a team advising his government on Covid-19 on Tuesday before his appearance before the NCOP, and that he would be considering it before addressing the nation over the next week.
He said talking about a return to a strict lockdown was premature, adding that what was required for now was strict compliance with Covid-19 security protocols, particularly as the holiday season approached.
“We have been reading reports of how groups of people have gone to various demonstrations, it could be meetings, it could be parties, where infections have been reported, where people who have gathered have become super spreaders.
“That is concerning and we must continue to say that as South Africans we must ensure that we pay attention to the measures that the medical advisory committee has imposed on us. We all need to adhere to those measures, particularly now as … we move into that fun period in December where people will let their guard down, ”he said.
But he insisted that the rumors of increased lockdown measures “are simply not true.”
“I don’t want our people to be alarmed by rumors like we are going to level 3. That is simply not true and I want to assure everyone that it is not true. If it ever gets there, I will be the one to let the nation know where we are and where we are going. For now, all we need is to comply with our preventive measures, ”he said.
