Deputy Auditor General Tsakani Maluleke.
- On Tuesday, Parliament unanimously approved Tsakani Maluleke as the new incoming Auditor General of SA (AGSA).
- Maluleke becomes the first woman to head the Attorney General’s Office.
- The 299 deputies present in the National Assembly voted in favor of Maluleke’s appointment.
On Tuesday, Parliament unanimously approved the nomination of Tsakani Maluleke to replace outgoing Kimi Makwethu as Auditor General, a senior anti-bribery official whose investigations have revealed deep-seated corruption and mismanagement in the government.
Maluleke has served as a deputy since 2014 in Makwethu, whose term ends next month.
Maluleke’s appointment was approved with the 299 deputies present voting in favor of him.
Nokuzola Tolashe, chair of the ad-hoc committee on the appointment of the attorney general, said Maluleke’s experience as deputy general manager served as an asset.
“We are recommending the name of a woman for this important position. This is the first time since democracy that this has occurred in a sector dominated by men. Her appointment will strengthen the empowerment of women,” she said.

IFP MP Mkhuleko Hlengwa said Maluleke was not only his first-choice candidate, but also the one on the committee.
“All candidates who applied for the position, particularly those shortlisted for the position, deserve a word of thanks. Not only was she our first choice, she was unanimously chosen by the entire committee. Maluleke not only possesses the qualifications and experience necessary, she has demonstrated the necessary leadership qualities, “he said.
DA MP Jan de Villiers said: “The president had asked us to all work together. In this committee, I saw firsthand what happens when politicians work together for South Africa and not for their political parties. Maluleke is the best candidate. She was not elected for political reasons. She was chosen because she was the best candidate. “
ANC chief Pemmy Majodina said the ANC had no doubt that the appointment of Maluleke would contribute to the empowerment of women.

ACDP MP Steve Swart said the decision was unanimous, showing that all parties could work together.
“He has a solid track record. He will take on a job when the Attorney General has more power to personally hold officials accountable for lost state funds. We hope that further action will be taken in this regard given the corruption and Covid-19 bidding,” he said . He said.
The chief prosecutor, Natasha Mazzone, said it was the first time “in a long time” that parliament voted unanimously in favor of an issue.
The Speaker of the House, Mmatlala Grace Boroto, agreed with Mazzone.
