Chippa United’s warning to Kaizer Chiefs: We’re also a wounded lion

Chilli Boys captain Veli Mothwa fired a warning shot at Amakhosi ahead of the league clash on Tuesday.

Chippa United plans to increase the pressure on new Kaizer Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt by taking points away from Amakhosi at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Tuesday night.

This is according to their captain and goalkeeper, Veli Mothwa.

Chippa will enter the game after a 1-1 draw against Cape Town last weekend. And having come from a goal down and finished as the strongest team against the Citizens, there will be a good degree of confidence within the Chilli Boys camp.

Amakhosi, meanwhile, has played twice this season: he managed a 2-1 win over Maritzburg United in the MTN8 quarter-finals and was later beaten 3-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns in their first league match.

Always under scrutiny as the biggest club in South Africa, the pressure will soon mount on Hunt and his men if they don’t start putting results together quickly.

That could work to the benefit of Chippa. And there’s also the matter of rematch: Last season, the Chilli Boys lost twice to Amakhosi and finished the second game with nine men after two red cards.

With this in mind, the Eastern Cape side is on fire to give the Soweto giants a steamy night.

“They may be a wounded lion, but so are we,” Mothwa told Sowetan Live.

“Remember what the bosses did to us [last season]? So there is no peace, no forgiveness for what they did to us.

“No matter what they bring us, we’re going to fight,” Mothwa continued. “Whoever loves him the most and works the hardest to be successful will be the happiest team.”

According to the Chippa goalkeeper, the key to success will be for his men to keep a cool head against their most illustrious and experienced opponents.

“Yes, it is a great game, we understand that it will be difficult. But I think everything will depend on how we apply our minds and work to achieve what we need on the field, “he explained.

In 16 previous games against the Glamor Boys, Chippa won five and lost nine.
