Johannesburg – At least two shots were fired on the day former soccer star Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed in Vosloorus, and another shot hit Zandi Khumalo in the ankle.

For the first time in six years, the NPA charge sheet details that not only was Meyiwa injured that fatal day when he was shot to death on October 26, 2014, but also Zandi.

The five suspects, Muzikawulahlela Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokosenzi Maphisa and SifikuhlenhleNkani Ntuli, have been charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, illegal possession of firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

On the charge sheet, the NPA said the defendant tried to kill Zandile Khumalo by shooting him with a firearm.

“There was a fight between Meyiwa and the person armed with a firearm, who had dreadlocks, had a golden dent in one of his teeth, and was wearing a khaki jacket.

“A shot was fired that ricocheted off the ground and hit Zandile Khumalo in the right ankle.

‘A second shot was fired and Mr. Meyiwa was shot in the chest while standing and the bullet went through his chest, exited from his back and hit the rear of the door against which Mr. Meyiwa was standing.

“This was a first contact. Possibly three shots were fired in total, ”the charge sheet reads.

The suspects have been charged with attempted murder for shooting Zandi.

Earlier in court, there was drama when the suspects refused to stand in the dock, claiming their innocence and claiming they were being framed for Meyiwa’s murder.

The suspects are currently behind bars for various crimes, some of them serving sentences, while others are still awaiting trial.

The matter was postponed until November 27.
