Johannesburg – There was great drama in the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday when the five suspects who were arrested in connection with the murder of the late Bafana Bafana star Senzo Meyiwa refused to step into the dock.
Muzikawulahlela Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokosizi Maphisa and SifikuhleNkani Ntuli face charges of murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, attempted murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition without a license.
All of them are currently behind bars serving sentences for different crimes, while others are still awaiting trial.
Meyiwa was shot and killed in Vosloorus at the home of his then-girlfriend, singer and actress Kelly Khumalo on October 26, 2014.
At the house that day were Meyiwa, Khumao, her sister Zandi Khumalo, her mother Ntombi, Longwe Twala, Meyiwa’s friends Mthokozisi Thwala and Tumelo Madlala, and Kelly’s 4-year-old son and daughter with Senzo.
The defendants refused to stand on the defendant’s dock, claiming they had nothing to do with the death of the soccer star.
“People who are supposed to be in court don’t show up because they have money,” Maphisa told the court.
During the judicial process, Meyiwa’s brother, Sifiso, cousin Siyabonga Miya and the Head of AfriForum’s Private Processes Unit, Attorney Gerrie Nel, were present.
Outside court, supporters braved the cold to offer support to the family, saying the defendant should not be released on bail.
The state’s attorney, Attorney Baloyi, read the charges to the defendant where one of them is also accused of stealing a Samsung cell phone from Kelly Khumalo.
The court also heard that Kelly Khumalo’s sister had been shot in the leg that day.
The state maintained the story that Meyiwa was killed in a robbery, that the suspects broke into Khumalo’s mother’s home in Vosloorus with an unlicensed firefighter and demanded money and cell phones.
This was despite the fact that Nel and the family said Monday that Meyiwa was not killed in a robbery, but in a murder.
“We agree that after we have examined the evidence that this was successful and we have indicated our full cooperation to expose the mastermind and ensure that the mastermind is prosecuted as well,” said Nel.
The procedure was temporarily suspended.
