Lewis Hamilton rewrote the Formula 1 history books today after claiming victory in the Portuguese Grand Prix. The victory not only saw him increase his lead at the top of the championship table, it was also the 92nd of his career.

Going into the race, Hamilton was tied with Schumacher for 91 F1 victories, but has taken the record his own. He also extended the record for the most pole positions when he achieved his 97th career pole in qualifying.

Hamilton won the race ahead of his Mercedes-AMG teammate Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen.

An epic start

Hamilton made a good start early in the race, but Bottas quickly knocked him down midway through the first lap. The action didn’t stop there when McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. crossed the field from seventh. At the end of the first lap, Sainz was leading Bottas’ race, which passed Hamilton moments before.

Sainz opted to start the race on the soft tire, while the two Mercedes men opted for the medium tire. It secured plenty of action in the opening laps, but Sainz quickly lowered the order after taking too much life out of his tires too quickly. Meanwhile, Bottas and Hamilton’s tires flared, allowing them to pass Sainz again a few laps later.

Hamilton soon found a rhythm and kept chasing Bottas. It didn’t take him long to get in Bottas’s gearbox and overtake him for the race lead. Bottas, meanwhile, struggled with low grip levels on his tires and had to settle for second place throughout the race.

In the end, Hamilton won the 92nd race of his career, beating Michael Schumacher’s record since 2006.
