A Zimbabwean chief miner has been arrested for alleged gold smuggling.
Zimbabwean police arrested the head of a miners’ federation, a former director general of the football association, on Monday for allegedly attempting to smuggle six kilograms of gold out of the country.
Henrietta Rushwaya, 53, president of the Zimbabwe Federation of Miners, was arrested at Harare’s main international airport with the precious mineral in her bag when she was checking in to catch a flight to Dubai.
Police said the gold is valued at about $ 366,000 (about € 310,000).
In a tweet, police said Rushwaya was arrested after “scanners at the airport checkpoint indicated that there was something in her carry-on luggage.”
“Searches revealed that the suspect had 6.09 kilograms of gold that had not been legally and properly authorized by customs and relevant offices for export,” police said.
“This is an alleged smuggling case,” they added.
Rushwaya leads the federation that primarily represents artisanal and small-scale miners.
The former executive director of the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) is expected to arrive in court on Tuesday.
