LONDON – Britain’s Prince Harry said it took him years to realize unconscious racial biases existed and that his eyes were widened by spending time in his wife Meghan’s shoes.
The prince spoke during a conversation about racism with Patrick Hutchinson, the black activist who was photographed by Reuters carrying a white man to safety during a fight between anti-racist protesters and far-right opponents in London in June.
Harry told Hutchinson that he saw him as a “guardian angel” protecting everyone on the show. Both men said there is still work to be done to overcome discrimination of all kinds.
“Unconscious bias, to my understanding, having the upbringing and upbringing I had, I had no idea what it was. I had no idea it existed,” Harry said during the online conversation, recorded last week for a magazine article. . GQ.
“And then, sad as it is to say, it took me many, many years to realize it, especially after living a day or a week in my wife’s shoes,” the prince added. Meghan’s father is white and her mother is African American.
Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have spoken out multiple times on racial issues since they left their roles as working members of the royal family in late March and moved to California.
Hutchinson, 50, told Harry that he had been to a previous protest where a female police officer had been injured, so he and some friends had decided to go again to see if they could help keep order.
“It was us protecting everyone and, as it turned out, someone on the other side … I would do it for anyone and I would do it over and over again,” he said.
The prince asked her how she felt about seeing the continued opposition to the anti-racism protests.
“It’s frustrating,” said the father of four. “It just makes you wonder why people find it so difficult to understand why we all strive – the equal side of things.”
