Cape Town – A terror clash between a taxi and a sedan on Monday morning left eight dead and several injured in the Western Cape.
Eight people were killed and several others injured this morning after a head-on collision between vehicles on Melkbosstrand Street between Melkbosstrand and Philadelphia in the Western Cape.
ER24 paramedics, with the police and various other services, arrived at the scene and found a light motor vehicle parked on the road, while a taxi was found sideways on the side of the road.
“Several people were found scattered around the place, while a man was trapped inside the taxi.
“Doctors evaluated the patients and found that eight people in the taxi had suffered numerous fatal injuries. Nothing could be done for them, and they were pronounced dead, ”said Russel Meiring, spokesman for ER24.
“At least 10 other patients were treated at the scene, including the trapped patient. The evaluations showed that the injuries sustained ranged from minor to critical. “
According to the SAPS spokesman, Captain FC Van Wyk, the injured were transferred to various hospitals in the metropolis.
“The taxi coming from the Dunoon direction was reportedly picking up passengers who took them to Melkbosstrand. On the Melkbosstrand highway, the taxi’s tire blew out and slammed it into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle, ”said Van Wyk.
“The driver of the other vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and jaws of life were used. The taxi driver was seriously injured and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. “
City traffic spokeswoman Maxine Bezuidenhout said: “Melkbosstrand Road is currently closed in both directions between the N7 and the Mamre Road exit. All role players are currently on the scene and the cause of the accident is being investigated. “
Van Wyk added that a wrongful death case was registered for his investigation and that the bodies have yet to be identified.
In an unrelated incident, a woman was killed and another injured this morning after an accident in Constantia.
“ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene and found a vehicle on the central island while another vehicle was found on the side of the road. A pedestrian was found lying in front of the car.
“Doctors evaluated the patients and found that the pedestrian, who is believed to be 60 years old, had suffered numerous fatal injuries. Nothing could be done for her and she was declared dead, ”Meiring said.
“Another driver, a woman in her 50s, was evaluated and found to have sustained moderate injuries. The woman was treated and later transferred to a nearby hospital for further care.
“It is understood that the pedestrian was run over after the two vehicles collided. Local authorities were at the scene to carry out further investigations, ”he said.
