Two auto theft suspects were arrested after a high-speed chase ended in a vehicle rollover on Umhlanga Rocks Drive (near the BP gas station) just after 8:20 a.m. Monday morning.

Tyron Powell of Marshall Security said security agents also found a live male peacock in the trunk of the overturned vehicle.

“The suspects had initially tried to steal a vehicle at eMdloti in the early hours of Monday morning, but were unsuccessful. The suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a brown Toyota Etios and the area IPU sent an alert.

“About 45 minutes later, the same vehicle was seen in uMhlanga by security officers from Marshall Security. When the suspects realized they were being followed, they rushed in, leading to a high-speed chase on Umhlanga Rocks Drive. When the suspects approached the gas station, they lost control of the vehicle and rolled down an embankment. Then the suspects tried to flee on foot, but were soon arrested, ”he said.

At this stage, Powell said it was unclear why the suspects had a peacock in the trunk of their getaway vehicle.

“The peacock was alive and kicking in the trunk of the vehicle and Jason Arnold has taken the bird to the local NPO, Broken Wings, which is caring for the bird. We also found several tools that are used to enter vehicles in Etios ”, he said.

A third suspect linked to the same gang evaded arrest and, according to Powell, was in another vehicle, which had been stolen in uMhlanga this morning.
