CAPE TOWN – Eight people died Monday and another 13 were injured in a head-on collision at Melkbosstrand in the Western Cape.
A minibus and a car collided Monday morning.
Maxine Bezuidenhout, Cape Town Traffic Service, said: “Melkbosstrand Road is currently closed in that direction between the N7 and Malmesbury Road and that is due to a frontal collision in which seven people were fatally injured. The cause of the accident is being investigated by the South African Police Service ”.
It is the last major fatal accident involving a taxi.
Last week, 16 people were killed when a minibus taxi collided with a truck in KwaZulu-Natal.
At the same time, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Monday that the government was paying urgent attention to problems in the taxi industry.
Ramaphosa has used his weekly newsletter to reflect on the sorry state of South Africa’s public transport sector.
It recognizes that millions of citizens use buses or taxi trains to carry out their daily activities.
He said that, sadly, public transportation continues to be fraught with challenges. Some are the legacy of apartheid development, but many are contemporary and persistent.
