In her affidavit, Mary Bushiri also denied wrongdoing. He said he was not actively involved in the business. He added that his children were too young to be separated from their parents.

The other defendant, Ntlokwane, who said she spent most of her time volunteering at the Bushiri church, said her family was financially dependent on her.

She said that her expenses, along with those of her mother and sister, normally exceed R10,000 that her mother cannot afford alone.

She also claimed that her husband permanently resides in Cape Town and that she is traveling from Gauteng to see him.

Ntlokwana said that he is also not guilty of suffering a large financial loss if he remains in custody.

Van den Heever notified the magistrate that it was difficult to access his clients where they were detained during the week.

Bushiri turned himself in to the Hawks on Tuesday of last week, while his wife Mary was arrested at their home that same day. The Hawks said Bushiri initially tried to “evade” his officers and then turned himself in in the presence of a “entourage of lawyers.”

Terrence Baloyi, head of legality and compliance for the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church said it was disappointing. However, he said Bushiri remains strong.

“He understands the ways of justice and believes that one day justice will prevail. Whatever is happening is just a test of time, ”he said.

Baloyi said that if the bond issue is not heard on Monday, they will abide by the court’s choice of a new date.

“It’s been a long and tiring day,” he said after Friday’s procedures.

“The state has insisted on the request to postpone for further investigation. The magistrate ruled against the state and granted us to proceed with the request for bail … We made our requests in the form of an affidavit and now it is up to the state to respond and, for the time being, the matter had to be postponed to Monday.

If it doesn’t happen on Monday, the court will have to postpone the date. That will be beyond our control and we will have to comply. We have no other choice, ”he said.
