Two Gauteng traffic officers, who allegedly demanded a 5,000 rand bribe from a truck driver, were arrested in a sting operation on Friday.

Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesman Simon Zwane said the couple allegedly stopped a truck on R101 on Tuesday and impounded it for unspecified reasons.

“They demanded a payment of 5,000 rand for the release of the vehicle. An arrangement was made for the money to be turned over to the suspects at the Makapanstad traffic offices, ”he said.

The incident was reported to the National Traffic Corruption Unit, which then set up a sting operation with the help of the Hawks.

“The suspects were arrested shortly after receiving the money and have been detained at the Makapanstad Police Station. They are scheduled to appear in Temba Magistrates Court on Monday, ”Zwane said.

Meanwhile, two administrative employees of Lekwa’s licensing authority in Standerton, Mpumalanga, were fired after an internal disciplinary hearing that found them guilty of serious dishonesty and fraud worth millions of rand.

Sandy Freddah Manana and Illody Mildred Townsend were fired for misrepresenting information about the eNatis system by illegally changing vehicle owners’ data to a bogus dealer to evade payment of full license fees that were due to the licensing authority.

“The state lost approximately R4m in revenue from these transactions. However, fraud and corruption in the Lekwa licensing authority are believed to cost the state more than R50 million in unpaid fees and fines, ”Zwane said.

The couple are still on trial in Middelburg magistrates court on similar charges.

“They are among eight officials who were arrested at the licensing authority in August of last year. They are expected to appear in court on December 11, “Zwane said.
