Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has surprisingly hinted that he mishandled Paul Pogba, particularly at the start of this season.
The French midfielder was a shadow of himself when the league started, but he was given minutes anyway and thus kept fighting.
To be fair, United were performing poorly overall, so Pogba wasn’t the only one looking poor.
However, Solskjaer would soon exclude him from the starting eleven and use him as a substitute on impact, which he did remarkably well.
Pogba’s lack of form was attributed to a lack of preseason, but perhaps fans have been a bit dismissive that he had to bounce back from Covid-19 as well.
According to the club’s official website, Solskjaer said: “You see, when you have good players, it is a good challenge and a good decision to make when you have players on the bench that can impact the game.
“I think Paul, in all three games this week, has had a very positive impact.
“Of course you have been out for a while with the coronavirus this summer. He’s getting better and better, and he’s getting fitter and fitter.
“Maybe I was unfair to him by starting him so early in the first games. He is progressing and has done very well when he has advanced. “
Perhaps Solskjaer was eager to start the season strong and played Pogba anyway, but in hindsight it was clearly the wrong decision.
However, now fans are hoping that the former Juventus player will start and start more frequently to bring consistency and form to Manchester United.
Back-to-back victories against Newcastle and PSG hinted at a more rosy future, but a disappointing draw against Chelsea brought everyone back to earth.
The season is long and there is still plenty of time to make an impact at the table, but fans are concerned that their problems with inconsistencies have extended into this season.
