Two traffic officers were arrested for allegedly demanding R5,000 to release a truck they had seized.
According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the incident occurred on R101 in North West on Tuesday.
“An arrangement was made for the money to be turned over to the suspects at the Makapanstad traffic offices,” said RTMC spokesman Simon Zwane.
He said the incident was reported to members of the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit (NTACU), who then set up a sting operation with the help of the Hawks.
“The suspects were arrested shortly after receiving the money and have been held at the Makapanstad police station,” Zwane said.
The couple are expected to appear in Temba Magistrates Court on Monday.
Fraud and corruption
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, two administrative employees of the Lekwa Licensing Authority in Standerton, Mpumalanga were fired following an internal disciplinary hearing that found them guilty of fraud and gross dishonesty.
“Ms. Sandy Freddah Manana and Ms. Illody Mildred Townsend were fired for misrepresenting information about the eNatis system by illegally changing vehicle owner details to a fake dealer to evade payment of full license fees that were due the licensing authority, “Zwane said.
He added that the state lost an estimated 4 million rand in revenue from these transactions, but that fraud and corruption at the Lekwa licensing authority was believed to have cost the state more than 50 million rand in fees and fines. unpaid.
The suspects are still being tried in the Middelburg Magistrates Court and face similar charges.
“They are among eight officials who were arrested at the licensing authority in August of last year.”
They are expected to appear in court on December 11.
