Cal Vin ‘That Luveve Boy’ is dead
In a sad event, Zimbabweans awoke to the news that the talented musician and award-winning rapper Cal Vin, whose real name is Mgcini Calvin Nhliziyo, has died. That loving boy, as Cal Vin was affectionately known, was 35 years old.
The local hip hop artist grew up in Luveve, a high-density suburb of Bulawayo, where he was introduced to the world of rap and hip hop in the late 1990s. Cal_Vin said he was heavily influenced by iconic musicians like Michael Jackson, Tupac, Oliver Mtukudzi and Jay Z.
He recorded his first studio trackback in 2003. In 2004, he was producing his own beats. However, his music was underrated at the time and only made it to the mainstream and achieved popular acclaim in 2014 with his huge box office hit EP, That loving boy.
The wildly popular track Zkhuphan It was so good that it caught the attention of South African rap king Cassper Nyovest, who publicly endorsed his endorsement of the track and collaborated with Cal_Vin on a remix of the song for the South African market.
Some of the awards Cal Vin has won include,
- Album of the year by Year of the Vin, Zim Hip Hop Awards 2015
- Best Male Artist, 2015 Zim Hip Hop Awards
- Song of the year for Z’khupan, Zim Hip Hop Awards 2015
At the time of publication, we had yet to confirm the talented musician’s cause of death.
Messages of condolence have been flowing on social media as people mourn Cal Vin. Below are just some of the messages.

Calvin put the Byo artists on the map. It also put Ndebele’s rap on the map. May his soul rest in peace.
