EUROPE AND THE SECOND WAVE

Europe becomes second region to cross 250,000 deaths when second Covid wave hits

Europe reported 200,000 daily infections for the first time on Thursday, as many southern European countries reported their highest number of cases in a single day this week.

Europe accounts for nearly 19% of global deaths and about 22% of global cases, according to a Reuters tally.

The United Kingdom, Italy, France, Russia, Belgium and Spain account for almost two-thirds of the approximately 250,000 deaths recorded so far out of a total of approximately 8 million cases in Europe.

The UK leads the death toll in Europe with some 45,000 deaths, followed by Italy, Spain, France and Russia. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday that Britain cannot depend on a vaccine and will need to use other measures to curb the pandemic.

Based on the average number of deaths reported in the last seven days on a daily basis, Russia reports 250 deaths per day, the highest number in Europe, followed by the UK and France with around 143 deaths each.

France became the seventh country to report more than 1 million coronavirus cases on Friday. It has been one of the most affected countries in the second wave and has imposed curfews in much of the country.

The average number of Covid-19 deaths reported each day in France has risen for 10 days in a row, according to a Reuters analysis.

Spain recently surpassed 1 million cases and is reporting 136 deaths in the last seven-day average of reported deaths. Its mortality rate of approximately 7.38 per 10,000 people is the highest in Europe and the second highest in the world after Peru.
