JOHANNESBURG – The Western Cape is among the top three provinces contributing to the growing number of new COVID-19 cases in South Africa.
Western Cape Health Department Chief of Operations Dr. Saadiq Kariem says a large super spread event in Cape Town contributed to this week’s numbers.
“It is important to determine when the data is extracted. That ultimately affects the rate of increase.”
“We had a huge super spreader event tied to a local bar in the southern suburbs of Cape Town that the event alone threw up so far, 109 cases unfortunately 57 students are also among those cases.”

SA’s death toll from COVID-19 rose to 18,891.
The Health Department has reported 48 more deaths in the past 24 hours.
Seven of the reported deaths occurred in the past 48 hours.

There have been 1,897 new cases of coronavirus in the country, bringing the total number of cases to 712,412.
South Africa’s recoveries now stand at 643,523, which translates to a 90% recovery rate.
