Durban – Former Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi, accused of corruption, has nine armed guards monitoring him in the ICU of a private Joburg hospital after suffering a heart attack this week.
Yesterday, his attorney, Daniel Witz, said that Agrizzi was confined to his bed with a leg cuff even though he was breathing through a ventilator, hooked up to a drip and undergoing dialysis.
“There are around nine armed guards, including three physically stationed in his intensive care room, for whatever reason, we are not sure why.
“He is also attached to the bed by the legs. The man is sedated, he is connected to a ventilator that goes down his throat, he is on dialysis, he is on drops. I’m not really sure where they think he’s going, ”Witz said.
With Agrizzi’s bail application appeal hearing scheduled for Monday in Johannesburg High Court, Witz said they would now argue that Agrizzi had not only been treated inhumanely as a person fighting for his life, but that this it was not at all conducive to her medical treatment. .
At his first bail hearing, which was denied last week, Agrizzi appeared in court in a seemingly fragile state with a small oxygen tank.
Agrizzi was deemed a flight risk by Magistrate Philip Venter after the state argued that it had not disclosed that it had transferred millions to offshore bank accounts in Italy.
Correctional Services spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo said that the security details revealed about Agrizzi in pre-trial detention at the hospital had been a violation of security protocols.
“When pre-trial detainees are transferred to external health facilities, they are still prisoners and are still being held in pre-trial detention, so we still have to take care of them.”
He added that the department consulted with doctors and if they said that the restrictive measures were harmful to the patient, they would comply.
