A principal was shot in his office, a teacher kidnapped, and a security officer screening students for symptoms of Covid-19 died in two violent attacks on schools in KwaZulu-Natal.
Provincial Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu said the principal was reportedly shot in his office in full view of students and educators.
Police spokeswoman Brig Jay Naicker said the 46-year-old principal was killed at a school in Msinga on Friday.
“The suspects fled with their getaway vehicle, which was found on fire a few miles from the scene,” Naicker said.
“The men allegedly kidnapped a teacher on her way home and fled in her vehicle. Police intercepted the vehicle on the KwaDolo reservation in Greytown and arrested six men. “
He said police seized an R5 rifle, two revolvers and 65 rounds of ammunition, in addition to eight cell phones and the hijacked vehicle.
“Six men between the ages of 26 and 38 will be charged with homicide and theft of vehicles, as well as illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They will appear in Greytown magistrates court on Monday, ”Naicker said.
“As the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, we strongly condemn this barbaric act, as school principals are seen as mentors and tutors for students. We hold a firm stance towards any form of violent crime in our educational system, ”Mshengu said in a statement.
A delegation of senior departmental officials was dispatched to the school to gather more information and provide support.
Naicker said that in the second incident, a 26-year-old compliance officer, whose job it is to screen students and teachers entering a school in accordance with Covid-19 regulations, was shot and killed at a school in Vumbu Reserve. , Maphumulo, North KwaZulu. Natal, Friday.
“The suspects fled the scene and the police were alerted. Police pursued the suspects along with help from the community. Two men armed with a shotgun and a knife were intercepted in a forest by police officers. One man was shot and mortally wounded during the skirmish while the other was arrested ”.

“The suspect will be charged with murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and will soon appear in the Maphumulo magistrates court,” Naicker added.
Firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests to determine if they were used in other crimes.
