  • A miner is reportedly receiving death threats after reporting the mine captain for using abusive language.
  • The employer, Murray & Roberts, says they are aware of the allegation.
  • Murray & Roberts says it does not condone any form of discrimination.

A miner allegedly received death threats from people who warned him to drop the case after he denounced the mine captain for using abusive language.

According to the employee, he and some of his colleagues have been experiencing racist and vulgar language from their mine captain.

He alleged that the mine captain addressed the black workers with phrases such as “monkeys”, “die” and “jou mas se p ***”.

He said that after reporting the incident, the mine captain fired him. They told him to make a medical exit.

“I went to the mine manager and explained that the mine captain had fired me for reporting him for the use of abusive language. He told me that I am not going anywhere,” he said.

Murray & Roberts spokesman Ed Jardim said they were aware of the allegation.

“[The mine captain] he admitted vulgar language but not racist comments, “Jardim said.

Jardim said they knew the captain had fired the employee, but was informed of the complaints procedure.

“We have gone through the grievance procedure, and the final decision of the HR coordinator is that it is a layoff for [the] captain of the mine, “said the employee.

But Jardim said the complaint procedure was carried out on October 2 and subsequently a disciplinary hearing was scheduled that would only be heard on Friday, October 23.

As such, there is not yet an outcome for the disciplinary hearing.

The employee claimed that since then he has been receiving death threats from people telling him to drop the case or he will die.

“Murray & Roberts does not condone any form of discrimination (and / or vulgar language) and expects everyone working or acting on behalf of the group to adhere to the highest standards,” said Jardim.
