JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng said on Thursday that it continued to have faith in David Makhura as president and prime minister.

This while the party in the province led another scandal with Makhura at the helm amid some calls from inside and outside the ANC to step aside.

On Thursday, his deputy Panyaza Lesufi said the provincial executive felt Makhura was leading them exceptionally well.

The party also announced its decision to submit former health MEC Dr. Bandile Masuku and presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko prior to their disciplinary proceedings.

Joburg City MMC Loyiso Masuku, who is also married to the former MEC, was acquitted of any wrongdoing and told she could return to work.

The ANC in Gauteng said there were no allegations linking Makhura to corruption.

Lesufi said that even with past affairs like Life Esidimeni, no crime was found against the Makhura. But some inside and outside the party have questioned why Makhura remained unharmed while those serving under him lose their careers to government scandals.

Lesufi said trying to punish the leaders for it was unfair.

“It will really send the wrong precedence for leaders to be booked on the basis of indictments,” Lesufi said.

The vice president also described this period as difficult for the party.

“Having someone who was working extremely hard like Comrade Bandile on the executive [and] to go through the processes that we have had to go through, we really believe that he was one of the people who was working very hard, ”he said.

The ANC in Gauteng also complained about media leaks of their closed conversations and said it would launch an investigation soon.
