Jürgen Klopp’s biggest nightmare in Liverpool has resurfaced, but the crucial difference now offers hope

You can probably count on one hand how many times this Jürgen Klopp-led Liverpool team has had an ‘off-the-wheels’ type of game. More recently, the humiliation against Aston Villa is certainly one that falls into that category, but you’d have to go back three years to find another.

A trip to Wembley Stadium and facing a Tottenham Hotspur team flying under Mauricio Pochettino, Liverpool collapsed before the break with just one goal from Mohamed Salah as a source of pride. Dejan Lovren was replaced after just half an hour, and the game was certainly a turning point for this team.

Just a couple of months later, Klopp wasted money and brought Virgil van Dijk into the club for a club-record transfer fee for a defender. This was a big step on the road to recovery and a quick change of mind at Anfield.

Liverpool were no longer going to allow themselves to be ripped apart as easily as they did against Spurs. They would be tough to beat and will make sure to bring the game to any opponent they face.

If the last three years since that defeat in the capital have taught us anything, it is that this Liverpool is more than capable of recovering from traumatic defeats. The players and coaching staff could easily have felt sorry for themselves and made excuses, but they didn’t. The players recovered and gradually rebuilt themselves to become a Champions League winning team and later a Premier League title winning team.

With the way Liverpool play, it always seemed inevitable that they would have a big day off at some point. That day was a little over fifteen days ago against Villa. Players have shown in recent times that they are capable of regrouping and getting back into shape after a major defeat. They will do it again now, of that you can be sure.

The last two games against Everton and Ajax showed something that has become the backbone of Liverpool’s main strengths. Ability to channel your frustrations and disappointments and try again at the next opportunity.

The trip to Goodison Park may not have produced the result everyone wanted, but he told us that the mental strength of this team should never be questioned. And then against Ajax, Liverpool showed that they can be a team that may not be extravagant in the future, but can show defensive stamina that makes them difficult to beat.

There is no doubt that Klopp and his players will show the strength and character to bounce back from damaging defeats. They have done it before, and are more than likely ready to do it again.

What I read on Liverpool.com

Be sure to watch Dan’s post-match version of last night’s win over Ajax. It’s a good read, and takes a look at the meaning behind the eyebrow-raising triple substitution that saw Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino depart.

Ollie has also written a good article on the current state of the Champions League amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and it doesn’t stop! It is definitely worth reading.

What i’m hearing

Check out the latest Blood Red podcast with Kai Delaney and Matt Addison as they talk about last night’s win at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
