The police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (Ipid), is investigating the death of a man who was shot by a Durban metro police officer on Thursday.
Spokeswoman Ndileka Cola said the shooting took place as the officer was driving to work in the morning.
“As alleged, the Durban metro police officer was on his way to work when three men tried to kidnap him while detaining him from robots. He allegedly pulled out his service pistol and fired, fatally wounding the unknown civilian approaching the driver’s door, ”Cola said.
Ipid will issue a preliminary report on the outcome of the investigation.
“The investigation process is still in a preliminary stage. Ipid’s investigating officer attended the crime scene. The law enforcement officer’s firearm has been brought in for ballistic analysis. [and the] The postmortem date has yet to be determined. The preliminary report will determine the way forward on this matter, ”he said.
