The Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) is investigating a death as a result of police action after a subway police officer shot and killed one of the three men who allegedly tried to kidnap him.

IPID spokeswoman Ndileka Cola said the incident occurred in Pinetown on Thursday morning.

“As alleged, the Durban metro police officer was on his way to work when three men tried to kidnap him as he stopped at an intersection.

“He allegedly pulled out his service pistol, fired, fatally wounding the unknown civilian approaching the driver’s door.

“The investigation process is still in a preliminary stage.

“The IPID investigating officer attended the crime scene, and the police officer’s firearm has been brought in for ballistic analysis. The date of the autopsy has not yet been determined.”

Cola said the preliminary report would determine the way forward on the matter.
