JOHANNESBURG – Former Dr. Bandile Masuku of the Gauteng Health Ministry and Presidential Spokesperson Khusela Diko will face disciplinary proceedings over the multi-million rand personal protective equipment (PPE) tender.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng said on Wednesday that the disciplinary committee would decide whether the duo should remain on the provincial executive committee (PEC).

Masuku, his wife Loyiso, and Diko were brought before the party’s integrity committee in July over the bid for more than R1 million issued by the Health Department for Diko’s husband. Couples are friends of the family.

The PEC welcomed Prime Minister David Makhura’s decision to fire Masuku, but wanted him to urgently hire his replacement.

Makhura left room for Masuku’s return, arguing that he would be reinstated if the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) absolved him of wrongdoing.

But the PEC said Makhura should appoint his replacement to stabilize the department that currently operates without a permanent department head and finance director.

Sources who attended the special meeting on Tuesday said the PEC was divided over the political fate of Masuku and Diko and decided to postpone their future to the disciplinary committee.

Previously, all three had been submitted to the party’s integrity commission, but their report was partially rejected and sent to the provincial working committee for reworking.

Now another structure would examine your case.
