According to police spokesman Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, on the night of July 12, 2017, Mokoena went to a local tavern with a friend from Gauteng and was later joined by Mosia, who was also a friend of the deceased.

“The three were planning to go and do illegal mining. Makena then told them that they had to ‘wait for a call’ before leaving and after receiving the call, the three went to Phakisa cemetery in Odendaalsrus,” Makhele said. .

At the cemetery, the three were reunited with Mahloane and an unknown person.

They were then joined by “David One Eye”, who demanded money for the golden balls that Mokoena owed him. When he said he had no money, Ndlovu ordered Mosia and Mahloane to kill Mokoena. He was shot execution-style in the head and body.

Gauteng’s friend of Mokoena managed to escape and reported the matter to his police friend, who referred him to the then investigating officer, former NCO Marumo. It was later discovered that Marumo was working for “David One Eye” after he falsified information in court.

Marumo was accused of violating the aims of justice and sentenced to three years in prison and was fired from the police.

Free State Police Commissioner Lt. Gen. Baile Motswenyane said he was glad that one of the Goldfields’ most feared, powerful and notorious criminals had been permanently removed from society.
