Pretoria – The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) said on Wednesday that a suspected armed robber, who was part of a group terrorizing people in the central district of Johannesburg, was shot dead during a clash with police.
“Last night, undercover JMPD agents received a complaint from a CCTV operator about a group of men who were seen terrorizing members of the public and robbing them with a firearm in the vicinity of the Noord and Wanderers taxi rank in the district Johannesburg’s financial institution, “JMPD spokeswoman Xolani Fihla said.
Officers intercepted the group at the Wanderers taxi rank.
“The suspects fled immediately, but one of the suspects ran towards an officer brandishing a firearm and pointing it at the officer,” Fihla said.
“Officers responded quickly and shot the suspect in the upper body, resulting in fatal injuries. The city of Johannesburg emergency medical services were called and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. “
An unlicensed firearm and two cell phones were recovered.
In July, the South African Police Service in central Johannesburg arrested three suspects for possessing firearms without a license.
Spokesman Captain Xoli Mbele said two of the three, aged between 30 and 34, were arrested at the Wanderers taxi rank while the third was detained at the Park Station bus terminal.
“The police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties at a taxi rank when they searched the passengers into a taxi heading to Harding in KwaZulu-Natal. Two passengers were found in possession of firearms and ammunition without a license.
“Another passenger was also found with an unlicensed firearm on a bus bound for Cape Town.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were arrested once for crimes ranging from attempted murder to possession of firearms without a license,” Mbele said.
