Two alleged bogus doctors have been arrested on charges of practicing without a license and dispensing drugs without a license in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape.
The Hawks, assisted by the South African Police Service Forensic Science Laboratory and the South African Health Professions Council, arrested the two, aged 44 and 61, on Tuesday.
According to the Hawks, the two began operating surgery at Bongalo Mall in Butterworth in January 2019, charging a consultation fee of R250 for each patient.
“His clients were mostly retirees from Butterworth, Dutywa, Ngqamakwe, Willowvale and Centana,” said Hawks spokesman Lwando Zenzile.
“Other patients who used the surgery for consultation allegedly paid fraudulent sickness certificates for work purposes,” Zenzile added.
During the investigation, it was also discovered that they were dispensing medications, including injections, without the necessary qualifications and licenses.
Zenzile said the joint team seized “volumes of drugs” and used syringes in the surgery for further investigation, while a search was also conducted of his home in east London.
They are scheduled to appear in Butterworth Magistrates Court on Thursday for a number of charges, including violation of the Health Professions Act, other health-related offenses, fraud, forgery, money laundering and statements.
