Amid the growing number of passengers, OR Tambo International Airport reopened the Piazza’s outdoor parking area on Wednesday (October 21) for pickup by taxis, e-hailing services and public transportation vehicles.
Airport spokesman Samukelo Khambule said the change will be tailored to increasing passenger volumes at the airport. The airport will also make more parking spaces available starting November 1, when Parkade 1 level 1 reopens.
“While passenger growth is steady, we are still in the early stages of recovery. But as more people begin to reconnect, we will be able to continue the process of adapting the arrangements implemented when the lockdown was lifted, ”said Khambule.
The airport has already reopened the upper way for the descent of passengers. The opening of the Piazza area will be accompanied by the reopening of selected entrances on the ground level of the terminal buildings, he said.
Access to the terminal buildings remains restricted to passengers in possession of a physical or electronic ticket.
The latest changes mean that Parkade 2 South level 2 will be for private vehicle pickups only. The first 30 minutes in Parkade 2 South are free.
At Level 2, the high parking fees reflect the need to keep vehicles moving through the area. Parking on levels 3 and 4 is considerably cheaper. The long-term parkade is also open where rates average R65 per day after four days.
Khambule said that the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department will continue to control access to the upper road. Drivers only vehicles are not allowed on the upper carriageway.
High risk countries
The Department of the Interior this week reviewed the list of high-risk countries that were banned from entering South Africa under level 1 lockdown rules.
The department said that people from high-risk countries who can enter the country fall into the following categories:
- Business travelers,
- Critical Skills Visa Holders,
- Investors
- People on an international mission in sports, arts, culture and science.
“Furthermore, we recognize that there are a number of regular visitors from mainly European countries who have been used to long periods of visiting our country during our summer season when it is winter in the northern hemisphere. Most of them own properties in the country, ”he said.
“We appreciate the important economic contribution they make through their activities in the country. To this end, we will also allow visitors, in any category, to come to stay for a period of three months or more subject to Covid-19 protocols. “
The department said travelers who need to submit an application should direct email requests to this email address ([email protected]) Supported by:
- A copy of the passport and / or temporary residence visa;
- Proof of commercial activities to be carried out in the Republic;
- Proof of travel itinerary; Y
- Proof of residence or accommodation in the Republic.
In the first two weeks that the email address was up and running, 4,701 applications were received, mostly from investors in agriculture, manufacturing, mining and tourism. Of these requests, 3,113 have been approved.
The department also released its updated list of high-risk countries based on its updated model.
Leisure travelers from high risk countries will not be allowed. The exception will be business travelers with poor and critical skills, including diplomats, returnees, investors, and people involved in professional sports and events will undergo the same health protocol checks.
The previous list of high-risk destinations had 60 countries. The latest update is just 22 years old, with Germany being the most notable addition.
