Microsoft has launched its October 2020 to update for Windows, which brings a number of enhancements to the popular operating system.
One of the most notable features of this update is a redesign of the Start menu.
Microsoft said it has optimized the layout of the Start menu, including a uniform and partially transparent background.
As part of this update, Microsoft has also redesigned the icons for the Calculator, Mail, and Calendar applications.
Users can add some color to their Start menu by turning on the dark theme and navigating to Settings> Personalization> Color and toggle “Show accent color on the following surfaces” for “Start, taskbar, and activity center.”
Other new features available in this update include:
- Smooth settings – You can manually change the refresh rate your screen uses by navigating to Settings> System> Display> Advanced display settings.
- 2-in-1 toast removal – 2-in-1 devices will automatically switch to the Windows tablet experience by default, instead of waiting for the user to confirm it in the notification toast that would appear above.
- Notable Notifications – There are new app logos at the top of the notifications that make it much easier to identify whose they are.
- Simpler taskbar: New Windows users will get a “cleaner, more personalized, out-of-the-box experience with a taskbar specifically selected for you.” (This is limited to new account creation or first login scenarios)
Microsoft Edge enhancements
This update includes the latest version of Microsoft Edge, which has several new features.
Collections is a new tool coming to Edge that will allow users to save and share content they find online and share their collections between their PC and mobile devices.
“It’s perfect for holiday shopping, school research, and even planning for next spring’s camping trip,” Microsoft said.
Price comparison complements this feature, allowing you to find the best price for an item when you add it to one of your collections.
“We are proud to say that Microsoft Edge is the best browser to buy this vacation,” Microsoft said.
Microsoft Edge will also allow you to use Alt + Tab to access your open tabs in Microsoft, and if you pin your favorite websites to your taskbar, you can hover over the icon and see all the open tabs for that website.
