Television news anchor Palesa Chubisi was one of 13 SABC employees who became the victim of the public protector’s report on SABC’s antics after she was allegedly fired while on the air Monday.
The corporation confirmed late Monday that 13 workers had received letters indicating the readjustment of their employment situation with the station.
“The SABC can confirm that 13 employees received letters describing the corporation’s decision regarding their circumstances related to irregular appointments. The SABC launched an investigation that concluded in June 2020, affecting employees who were appointed / promoted and / or received salary adjustments in an illegal and irregular manner. SABC believes that these employees benefited through a process that denied other colleagues equitable and fair access to compete for appointments and promotions.
“It should be noted that SABC leadership has an obligation to do the right thing and not tolerate unethical practices,” said SABC spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo.
Chubisi’s firing follows Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s June report on allegations of an irregularity in the position of producer / host of the station’s morning news program, Morning Live. Chubisi is also the host of Leihlo la Sechaba and a co-host of SA Today.
In the report, the complainant stated that in April 2016, the SABC appointed Chubisi permanently to the position without following and adhering to the recruitment procedures and prescriptions in force at that time. She was preferred and appointed before other candidates who were adequately qualified and experienced for the position.
The appointment was described as mismanagement and impropriety. In its findings, Mkhwebane said the SABC did not advertise the vacancy as required by its hiring policy.
It found that Chubisi’s appointment violated section 186 (2) of the LRA and 26 (1) of the Broadcasting Act, as well as Part b and Part d1 of SABC’s hiring policy.
Mkhwebane’s corrective action was for the SABC group executive director to take action within 30 days of receiving the report to confirm that the appointment was in line with the hiring process or to place her in a position commensurate with her level. within the SABC. . Alternatively, Mkhwebane said that SABC could migrate Chubisi to the producer / presenter position he previously held on Lesedi FM.
The public protector added that within 60 days of receiving the report, the SABC needed to train and educate its employees on compliance and compliance with its policies.
In an internal communication email sent to all SABC employees, which The Star has seen, the outcome of the report and the announcement made by the board in February were discussed.
“All those who were named / promoted and / or received salary adjustments in an illegal and irregular manner, have received letters today (Monday), in which the decision of the corporation regarding their circumstances is described. It should be noted that all of the above are those who benefited through a process that denied other colleagues equitable and fair access to compete for appointments and promotions ”.
“’There is a second group that will be finalized before the end of this calendar year.
“We hope to bring this process to a goal and allow the corporation to focus more on its process of renewing culture, which is based on our values, in particular integrity.”
