An elderly man tried in vain to rip the pit bull from his wife while mutilating her to death in Port Elizabeth Monday night.
Police spokeswoman Capt.Sandra Janse van Rensburg said an investigation file has since been opened.
Belinda Jonker, 64, died at the scene.
According to Janse van Rensburg, around 9:30 p.m. Monday, as Jonker and her husband were leaving their home on Summerville Street, Morningside, the family dog attacked her.
“The dead people [Jonker] had difficulty getting into the car.
“While her husband was busy helping her, her four-year-old pit bull attacked her.
“Her husband tried to get the dog out, but he couldn’t help his wife,” Janse van Rensburg said.
The 66-year-old man alerted his neighbors, who finally managed to rip the woman’s dog and tie it to a tree.
“She suffered several injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.
“The Animal Anti-Cruelty League was called in to get the dog out of the house,” said Janse van Rensburg.
