More players are expected to head to the starting gate at Mamelodi Sundowns after co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi warned they would continue to wield the ax for days to come in a bid to shrink the team to a more manageable size.

Sundowns still has around 40 players even after ditching the likes of Malebogo Modise, Nicholus Lukhubeni, José Alí Meza, Aubrey Ngoma, Lucky Mohomi, and Oupa Manyisa.

Malebogo Modise and Nicholus Lukhubeni have been loaned to Maritzburg United and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) respectively, while Mohomi has joined SuperSport United.

Meza left for Maritzburg United, Ngoma returned to Cape Town, Manyisa left before the end of last season, while Anele Ngcongca and Anthony Laffor are also approaching the starting gate.

“The players will be released, but at this stage we have to watch them very closely because we have a very large team at the moment,” said Mngqithi, who is co-coach with Rulani Mokwena. Steve Komphela’s position is described as a “senior coach.”

Sundowns has signed Kermit Erasmus, Khuliso Mudau, Ricardo Goss, Haashim Domingo, Jody February, Grant Margeman, Peter Shalulile, Mothobi Mvala, Lesedi Kapinga, George Maluleka, Gift Motupa, Aubrey Modiba and Nyiko Mobbie.

“We are trying to make sure we have a sizeable team that we can work with without too much disturbance,” Mngqithi continued.

“We are hopeful that in a week or two we will be able to have a team that we believe will stay with us and possibly other players will also have the opportunity to go play elsewhere. We will definitely not have the team.” we have now. “

Mngqithi also said they took many positives from their MTN8 quarter-final loss to Bloemfontein Celtic at the weekend, which was the club’s first game since former coach Pitso Mosimane left for Egyptian Al Ahly last month.

“On the positive side, there was a lot of good work and we think Haashim Domingo played very well as number 10 for us.

“I think Peter Shalulile was a constant threat in attack, although he sometimes lost possession for little money, but he always sought to help the team establish a game from behind.

“I think we did what we had to do, but unfortunately we didn’t get the results we wanted. But I think we are building something very interesting here.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him curdle and give him a little more time knowing full well that at Sundowns we have to win every game.”
