Pick n Pay has agreed to purchase bottles of on-demand alcohol and grocery delivery service.
Bottles launched in 2016 as South Africa’s first on-demand alcohol delivery app and partnered with Pick n Pay in 2018.
Bottles repurposed their app when the blockade began delivering on-demand food to customers through a service it calls Grocery Essentials.
The Bottles acquisition is expected to be completed in November 2020, with founding members Enrico Ferigolli and Vincent Viviers moving to Pick n Pay along with managers and key staff.
The Bottles app has been downloaded more than 700,000 times and has acquired more than 350,000 registered users since it moved to grocery deliveries on March 31, 2020.
“The Grocery Essentials offering has been hugely popular with customers, building on Bottles’ achievement as the top-rated app by customers in the industry,” said Richard Brasher, CEO of Pick n Pay.
Brasher said Pick n Pay has seen an increase in demand for online groceries in South Africa during the closing period.
“Together with our franchise partners, we have responded by expanding the number of stores that deliver or offer click-and-pick services. Our sales growth has more than doubled and we have seen a 200% increase in active customers, ”said Brasher.
“Therefore, we are delighted to acquire Bottles. It will allow us to build on the tremendous momentum we’ve built by integrating the Bottles business into our existing online offering and applying Bottles agility, innovation and marketing style across our platform. “
“Our goal is to have a business that customers can access anytime, anywhere, from anywhere,” said Brasher.
“We already have two large online warehouses and a click-and-collect home delivery network comprising more than 150 stores. Adding bottles to Pick n Pay will give us another advantage and allow us to offer more services and more flexibility to customers in this fast-growing area. “
