President Cyril Ramaphosa has wished Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and his wife, May, a speedy recovery after both tested positive for Covid-19.

“The President wishes the Mkhizes a safe and smooth recovery and joins the Minister in calling on all South Africans to remain cautious and do whatever is necessary to maintain security and help the country avoid a second wave of the pandemic. “said the spokesman for the presidency, Tyrone. Seale said.

By Sunday night, the number of cases in South Africa had risen by 1,662, bringing the cumulative number to 703,793. A total of 634,543 people have recovered and the country has recorded 18,471 deaths.

Mkhize announced Sunday night that he and his wife had tested positive for the virus after developing mild symptoms and is quarantined at home.

He has been at the forefront of SA’s efforts to handle the pandemic and is the fifth cabinet minister to test positive for Covid-19. Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Employment and Labor Thulas Nxesi, Minister of Trade and Industry Ebrahim Patel and Minister of Defense Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula have previously announced that they have tested positive for the illness. All four have fully recovered.

Mkhize described the symptoms that led to her decision to test for the virus.

“I was feeling abnormally exhausted and as the day progressed, I began to lose my appetite. My wife had a cough, she was dizzy and extremely exhausted. Given his symptoms, the doctors advised him to go in for observation and rehydration, ”he said.

Mkhize said her close contacts last week have been some of her family members and part of her team from the health ministry. They have been informed and advised to isolate themselves at home and get tested.

The minister did not say how many people were affected.
