Mpumalanga police launched a manhunt after a lawyer was shot and killed during a robbery at a farm in White River Monday morning.
Police identified the deceased as Gerrit Stander, 37, who worked at Swanepoel & Partners in Mbombela.
Police spokesman Colonel Donald Mdhluli said Stander’s father-in-law received a WhatsApp message from his wife, saying there was a robbery at their home. The message said that he should call the police and paramedics as Stander had been shot.
According to Netwerk24, he was shot in the presence of his wife and eight-year-old daughter after a skirmish with robbers.
Community police forum member Jacques Slabbert was quoted as saying that five shots were fired, of which three hit Stander.
“The wounded man was taken to hospital for medical treatment after suffering gunshot wounds. Valuables were also reported to have been stolen during this incident. Unfortunately, the man was reported to have passed away in hospital,” Mdhluli said.
Police were investigating a murder and burglary case, and were looking for the suspects.
“The details are still vague as the wife of the murdered man was still in shock and the police are still waiting to get her statement which could shed light on the details of what happened during the incident,” he added.
The police have appealed to the public to help with the information by calling the branch commander, Detective Captain John Mabunda, on 082 449 0334 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
