SENEKAL – A second man arrested for public violence in Senekal farmers’ protests has been released on bail.

Stephanus Johannes Fourie made a brief appearance at Senekal Magistrates Court on Monday.

The court has determined that it is in his best interest to grant him a bail of R15,000.

At the same time, Andre Pienaar, the other defendant facing similar charges, also received a bail of 15,000 rand in Bloemfontein High Court.

Fourie (33) stepped into the dock today for the first time after spending the weekend behind bars.

He faces charges of attempted murder and public violence and incitement to commit violent acts for his role in the violent protests in front of the Senekal Magistrates Court earlier this month.

The state did not object to the bail, but prescribed an amount of R15,000 per bail, which his lawyer Wayne Gibbs told the court he could pay.

However, Magistrate Fundiswa Lufutu still required him to justify why he should be granted bail.

Fourie told the court that he owns a towing company and that if he is not released on bail, his business will be adversely affected.

He also assured the court that he was not at risk of flight and that he would faithfully attend court.
