André Pienaar, the man accused of inciting violence at Senekal Magistrates Court in the Free State, received a bail of 15,000 rand on Monday.
This comes after Pienaar’s bail request was initially denied last Tuesday, prompting him to address the Free State High Court in Bloemfontein.
The Senekal court had denied Pienaar bail after determining that there was the possibility of public protests if he was released, though he could also interfere with witnesses.
The State had argued that the seriousness of the charges against the farmer also justified the restriction of his freedoms.
Pienaar, who faces one count of attempted murder, public violence and intentional damage to property, will appear in court again on November 20.
Meanwhile, the second suspect also allegedly involved in the Senekal protests was due to appear in court on Monday.
The 33-year-old man was arrested Friday. He faces charges of public violence, arson, intentional damage to property and attempted murder.
The arrested suspect resides in Senekal and owns a towing service.
Background
On October 6, farmers went to court to see for the first time two suspects in the death of 22-year-old farm manager Brendin Horner.
They tried to reach the suspects in the holding cells of the court, which led to clashes with the police, which caused a police van to overturn and catch fire.
The violent protests prompted Police Minister Bheki Cele to call for swift action in response to the matter.
Horner’s body was discovered tied to a post, with multiple stab wounds and head injuries earlier this month, causing outrage among the farming community as it is under siege from criminal attackers.
