Northwest schools burned as police plead for public help

Northwest Police are asking the public for help after arsonists attacked four schools in Moruleng, north of Rustenburg, last week.

The Northwest Department of Education said it received news Thursday that four schools were on fire. They said the motive for the “burning” of school property had not yet been established.

Details were provided as:

  • At Manamakgotha ​​High School, a structure used for assembly was partially burned, along with 200 chairs, five desks, a teachers’ lounge, five classrooms and an administration office;
  • At Raphurele High School in Welgevaal village, attempts were made to burn down the classrooms;
  • In Moruleng, the doors of two classrooms were partially burned; Y
  • At Dikwepi primary school, two classrooms were completely burned and one partially burned.

Education department spokesman Elias Malindi said a case was opened with the police.

Education MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela condemned the attacks “in the harshest terms” saying they were a setback for students and the education system.

He said those responsible were “savagely cruel.”

“We strongly condemn this and those who did it are savagely cruel to their community. This barbaric custom of burning schools should come to an end. We cannot emphasize how serious this setback is for the already committed academic year, ”he said.

“As a department, we plead with the community to work with the police to expose these criminals and they must be found,” Matsemela said.

Malindi said the education sector was preparing for the students’ end-of-year exams, which begin on November 5, 2020.

“We ask the communities to give students the opportunity to conclude the academic year in peace,” Malindi said.
