“The driver claimed he was on duty before he was handcuffed and taken to Bedfordview Police Station,” Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) spokesman Kobeli Mokheseng said on Sunday.

The sprinters cited excuses ranging from siblings giving birth, attending funerals, being late for meetings in Pietermaritzburg, running home and performing “reporting duties.”

They were caught driving at speeds ranging from 163 km / h to 170 km / h.

On Saturday morning in Elsburg, between 05:00 and 10:00, on the N17 motorway, heading east at the Guthrie Bridge, three men, 38, 39 and 42 years old, were caught doing 162 km / h , 175 km / h and 180 km / h respectively. .

They were detained and escorted to the Elsburg police station. Their reasons for speeding were being late for work and rushing to their workplaces, Mokheseng added.

All nine will soon appear in Germiston Magistrates Court on charges of reckless and negligent driving.
