Durban – Thirteen members of a KwaZulu-Natal family who died in a terrible taxi accident last weekend were buried in Bulwer on Saturday.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transportation, Community Safety and Liaison Bheki Ntuli addressed the mourners at the mass funeral for members of the Mndali family.
Ntuli reiterated the government’s commitment to end the scourge of deaths, during transportation month and beyond.
He also called on traffic law enforcement officials to step up their operations to achieve meaningful results in the fight to prosecute errant road users.
The family was reportedly returning from a ceremony when the vehicle crashed into a bank in Kilmun, between Underberg and Bulwer.
Two people remain in critical condition at the hospital.
Speaking to the Daily News earlier this week, 29-year-old Zuziwe Mndali said five people from her home had died, four at the scene and one at the hospital.
“After the ceremony, my brother, Njabulo, said that he was going to fill the taxi with gasoline and everyone said they would go with him. They went to get gas and never came back, “he said.
“The family is really worried. Now we stay with dad. He was not working and the two taxis helped us. Now one is gone and the two drivers who were relatives died in the accident, “said Mndali.
Thonqo Dlamini, 51, said three of the dead were from his home: his sister-in-law, Nobuhle, his brother Sandile and his grandson Enzokuhle.
