JOHANNESBURG – Five people are believed to have drowned and four others were seriously injured in two separate boating accidents on the Vaal River and the Vaal Dam.
It is understood that a boat carrying seven people sank in the river near Spider Valley on Saturday.
One body was recovered from the river bank, while four others remain missing.
Ross Campbell, spokesperson for ER24: “Two people, a man and a woman, survived with minor injuries. ER24 paramedics were on the scene, along with South African Police Services and Metro EMS. A body has since been recovered. and four are still missing. The man explained that the boat was entering the water when it capsized. The SAPS was at the scene to be investigated and was waiting for rescue divers to recover. “
In another incident, four people were injured, two seriously, when a jet ski and a speedboat collided at Vaal Marina.
Paramedics said bystanders had brought the group to shore in another boat.
A 41-year-old woman who suffered head injuries and a 44-year-old man with multiple injuries were airlifted to the hospital.
