The return leg will be played at Alexandria’s Borg El Arab Stadium on Friday night, with Ahly being the main favorites to finish the semi-final at home.
If Ahly prevails, it will be a sweet victory for Mosimane, who suffered narrow defeats in some epic matches against Wydad at Sundowns, earning the respect of the Moroccan club and its supporters.
Wydad has arguably been the strongest team in the Champions League for the past four years, reaching the semi-finals in 2016, winning in 2017, coming out in the quarterfinals in 2018 and achieving runner-up in 2019.
Ahly are desperate for their ninth title, having last won the Champions League seven years ago in 2013 when they beat the Orlando Pirates 3-1 on aggregate in the final.
If they advance to this edition’s final, Ahly will face the winners Raja Casablanca and Zamalek, who will play the first leg of their semi-final in Morocco on Sunday night.
Mosimane has also started brilliantly in the Egyptian league, with a 1-0 win against Al Mokawloon and a 3-0 win against ENPPI, before a 0-0 draw with Pyramids.
