In context: Having a PlayStation Plus (PS +) membership has some clear advantages. The $ 60 per year service is required for online games, but even if you are not an online gamer, the subscription offers free games and discounts that pay more than a year of service.
With the launch of PlayStation 5, PlayStation Plus members will get a new benefit and one that is not so new.
The latest perk for PS + members is called the “PlayStation Plus Collection” which Sony announced when it revealed the price and release date of the PS5. It’s a curated library of backward-compatible PlayStation 4 games that Plus members can access for free. Sony did not share whether the titles will periodically rotate in and out of the catalog. However, it had a list of games available at launch, and they are all quality titles.
- Batman: Arkham Knight
- Battlefield 1
- Bloodborne
- Past days
- Detroit: become human
- Fallout 4
- Final Fantasy XV
- God of War
- infamous second son
- The last guardian
- The Last of Us Remastered
- Monster Hunter: World
- Mortal Kombat X
- Person 5
- Ratchet and Clank
- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
- Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
- Until sunrise
The other benefit PS + members receive is two additional free games per month. This right is not so new. After the launch of the PS4 in 2013, Plus subscribers, who had been getting just two PS3 games and one PS Vita game per month, got two additional titles for PlayStation 4. In March 2019, Sony discontinued free games. for PS3 and Vita. so members have only been receiving two PS4 titles per month.
Some may ask, “What’s the point of getting two free PS5 games if you don’t have a PS5?” Well, unless Sony changes the claim process, you should be able to claim all four titles regardless of ownership, although you would have to get the PS5 games from the online store as they may not show up in the app of the PS4 store. Doing this can build up a small collection of PS5 games before you even deposit money on the console.
However, it is not clear when Sony will start offering free PlayStation 5 games. Generally, free titles are those that have been available for at least a while. Having something to offer at, or shortly after, the PS5 launch next month could be problematic for developers.
However, when they did so in 2013, Resogun and Contrast were two PS4 games offered in the same month the console was released. So there is a chance that Sony will have some PlayStation 5 giveaways for PS + members on the first day. If so, I am speculating that they will be own games from one of the PlayStation game studios.
Subscriptions to PlayStation Plus cost $ 10 per month or $ 60 per year. You can also often find them for sale through Amazon and other vendors for as little as $ 35 for a year. I always snag these agreements and add them until the end of my current membership.
