‘Oh my God’: Ray Houghton ‘shocked’ by incident in Liverpool draw today

Liverpool icon Ray Houghton has given his take on the controversial VAR incident in today’s Merseyside derby draw in a conversation with talkSPORT.

The Reds took on Everton at Goodison Park and played a 2-2 draw, although Jurgen Klopp’s charges were denied a late goal.

Liverpool saw two controversial decisions against them today, the first related to a foul by Jordan Pickford on Virgil van Dijk that could have warranted a penalty and a sending off.

The VAR checked the incident for a possible offside and, once given, did not look for a possible red card for the sixth minute challenge, which saw the Dutchman out of the game.

Liverpool had gone ahead three minutes earlier through Sadio Mane, but Michael Keane leveled in the 19th minute.

The second half saw Mohamed Salah put the Reds in front again, only for the prolific Dominic Calvert-Lewin to tie Everton again.

The Carlo Ancelotti charges ended the game with ten men after Richarlison was sent off for a reckless foul on Thiago Alcantara, then arguably the game’s main controversy.

Mane received the pass from Thiago and selected Jordan Henderson for a goal Pickford should have left out, only for Senegal’s ace to be considered offside and the goal was scored.

“Oh my gosh,” Houghton told talkSPORT. “I’m just looking at Jurgen Klopp in his technical area, and he’s laughing! He’s actually laughing, it’s amazing!

“I’m looking at the monitor and it’s very, very tight. I don’t know, I couldn’t tell you how it’s offside, I thought it was on.

“We had everything today, we had four goals, we had an expulsion and we had the VAR having an opinion on whether or not it was a goal.

“From the number of games we’ve had here at Goodison, where we’ve had a monotonous 0-0, today was an exciting game for Merseyside and it shows how far Everton have come as a team.

“For Liverpool, they got over that 7-2 loss to Aston Villa, I thought it was a great game to watch, absolutely brilliant. But I am shocked by that decision. “

TBR view:

At first glance, he suggested that Mane appeared to be on the same level as Everton’s last man, but was apparently offside by the narrowest margin.

In fact, Keith Hackett felt the goal should have been stopped and told Caught Offside that “the hand / arm down to the bottom of the armpit is not a part of the body that I can score.

“The cameras have speeds of up to 50 frames per second, so they don’t have the level of precision to make this judgment. It’s a bad decision ”.

VAR will once again be asked questions in the wake of Pickford’s foul on Van Dijk and this late goal disallowed.
