A diesel thief was sentenced to 13 years for stealing diesel from a Transnet fuel line.

Hawks spokesman Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said Batsarai Chimutanga, 27, was seen in a honeyfield on the Klip River in the Vaal area.

He was convicted of stealing diesel worth about R300,000 and tampering with essential infrastructure.

He was arrested in March after investigators received a tip about men tampering with the fuel line at the Greenland Mielie farm.

He was arrested in the getaway van.

The State now also intends to request a seizure warrant for his truck.

Three years of his 13-year sentence have been suspended for five years.
