An officer from the St Albans Correctional Center has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle into the center.
According to the Department of Correctional Services, the incident occurred on Friday morning during a routine search of the center’s entrance.
“National task force [NTT] Security officers were conducting a routine search for people at the access control gate when they noticed their vehicle, “said department spokesman Nobuntu Gantana.
He added that the officer approached the door with his vehicle, but then turned the car around and drove away when he noticed a search was underway.

NTT officers with the help of three police officers caught the officer and escorted him back to the center.
Gantana said that when they searched his car, they found 120 mandrax tablets, five Vodacom starter packs, two Telkom starter packs, four MTN starter packs, two Cell C starter packs, a USB OTG cell phone cable, five cell phones, three headsets, and three cell phone chargers. .
All the items were confiscated and a case was opened at the Kabega Park Police Station.
“The official was subsequently arrested on Friday and is currently in custody,” Gantana added.
